The Hidden Tobacco City

Concept by Gabi Linde creator of HiddenCampus /Cologne, Germany/, specially desigend for the Open Call for Tobacco City.Inception!

The Hidden Tobacco City’s goal as a game is for participants to create an alternative city guide within the city. The Tobacco city is “haunted” by interesting, mythical, and strange things – entrances, ornaments on facades and such, gardens, stone walls. Looking at these objects we will also look for a collective memory and see what we’ve found – “Once a blacksmith lived there and he…”, “This hole in the wall was there to…”. This way we can create our secret city tour with long lost memories that might or might not be true. We can also see into the future: “After 154 years… will stand in this square”.

Hidden Tobacco City is a participatory game devoted to constant discovering, searching, improvising, storytelling, and recapping of memories. It can be played in a few rounds of 1 hour each. Each one picks up where the previous one has left. The goal is for participants to walk around the city, to get inspired by the surrounding environment and see in-depth/create the alternative story of the Tobacco city. All the memorable places documenting the stories and memories will be placed on a map. As a result, there might be alternative city tours offered later in time because of these alternative games and stories in the Tobacco city.

  • Number of participants – 10 - 20;
  • Duration – one hour for each round; various rounds;
  • Materials – city map, pen and paper
  • Preparation – local helpers, translator.
