Tobacco City Inception - Тютюневия град ГЕНЕЗИС - game days – a two-days urban game festival promoted by Plovdiv 2019 - European Capital of Culture
Plovdiv 2019 Foundation is glad to present Tobacco City Inception - Тютюневия град ГЕНЕЗИС, a two days urban games festival that will take place 11 and 12 November 2017.
The Festival will showcase different games from european game designers, a workshop about urban games open to the creative people of the city of Plovdiv and a presentation of “Klink” a urban game just realized by the city of Matera, Italy (also capital of culture in 2019). The festival will took place in the Tobacco City, an area of the city of Plovdiv characterized by abandoned warehouse with a remarkable esthetic value and a special focus of the official programme of Plovdiv 2019. More info about the area here Plovdiv 2019 Foundation wants to explore the urban games as a powerful strategy to improve, make alive and take back abandoned city areas, and want to build a community of creative people that would explore this topic in the next years, to make it a important cornerstone of the 2019 cultural program.
Tobacco City Inception is the first experiment in this direction, the goal is to ignite a reaction both in the creative Plovidiv community and in the city itself. In order to reach this goal, Plovdiv 2019 Foundation has decided to open a call to European Game Designers that are interested in showcase their games during the Festival, the application deadline is Wednesday 18th October at 12 (noon).

Call
During the festival we will showcase 2 games, 1 of them will be played Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning (2 daylight session) the other one will be played Saturday night (11th November).
The area
The space where we will play will be the Tobacco City, an area of abandoned warehouse in the city center of Plovdiv. We will use public space between the warehouse, and if necessary, some indoor space (in case of bad weather). Here is the link to the official website of the Tobacco City project. Games
Due to the fact that this is the first Experiment of urban games we are expecting a selected public (mostly families and young people) between 30 to 60 people.
The proposed games must to have room for this public and be able to make them play all in the time-span suggested. For example, Game A could suggest to have 20 players for round and have two round in the two hours (20*2=40 players in total), Game B could suggest to have shorter round (10 minutes) for 4 people/each (12*4=48 players in total), both games are suitable for the Festival.
Designer Fee
The fee for the designer is 500€ including game’s material (travel and accomodation are excluded).
- Travel Dates - 9/10 November - 13 November 2017 /Flight to Sofia airport, and transfer to/from Plovdiv/
- Application Deadline - Deadline for the application is Wednesday October 18th.
- The result of the selection will be communicated 5 days after the deadline (October 23th).
- Eligibility - The selected designer must be able to produce an invoice based on the contract that will follow the selection, payment will be due in 30 days
after the end of the Festival (13th December 2017). - Games already play-tested also in different cultural contest will be preferred. Travel and accomodation will be covered by Plovdiv 2019 Foundation, meals are excluded.
- Selection process Plovdiv 2019 Foundation will evaluate the proposals based on the eligibility criteria and the fit between selected games.

Tobacco City Area
The Tobacco warehouses in Plovdiv preserve a special history and potential. Although most of the warehouses are now abandoned, the buildings are not forgotten and the area still fascinates with its unique architecture.The project “The Tobacco City” is part of the Cluster “Urban Dreams” in the project platform Transform of the programme of “Plovdiv 2019”. Transform means the re-thinking and re-cycling of forgotten and unused urban spaces, as well as new ways of perceiving them.
