The Tobacco City becomes part of the European Route Of Industrial Heritage

The ensemble of former Tobacco warehouses in Plovdiv, built in the 1920s, became part of the European Route of Industrial Heritage. The Tobacco City is now together with sites such as the "Steel Heart" of Ostrava, the Czech Republic, the Metal City of Gegenheimer, Germany, and the Museum of Iron and Steel Industry and mining in Castilla y Leon, Sambre, Spain.

European Route Of Industrial Heritage initiative was launched in 1999 and is currently the largest digital information platform dedicated to Europe's industrial heritage. Supported by the European Union, the European Commission, and Creative Europe, more than 1600 locations from 47 countries are being featured on the network, presenting routes to industrial buildings and museums dedicated to industry from the past.

The Tobacco City is presented as a project part of the programme of Plovdiv - European Capital of Culture 2019, which through multi-genre artistic activities, installations, exhibitions and research aims to draw the attention and provoke the interest towards this specific urban area. The European Route Of Industrial Heritage directs the visitor to those sites on the continent that, although they have changed their functional belonging, are now attractive and interesting specific tourist destinations. In the digital platform, the city of Tobacco is shown with footage from the Urban Games held at the end of 2017, showing the place as suitable for creativity and entertainment.

With the incorporation of the Tobacco City into the European Industrial Heritage Path, Plovdiv 2019 Foundation realizes the ideas of the TRANSFORMATION platform in the Urban Dreams cluster to revitalize the spaces.
