Conception and idea
Today the tobacco warehouses in Plovdiv have almost lost their true purpose. Only old inscriptions and forms give up their true nature. There are more than 30 tobacco warehouses in Plovdiv. A big part of them are abandoned - looking like ruins. That's why I have selected one of them as my thesis project. And that one is Kudoglu's tobacco warehouse. Here I can talk all day about Dimitar Kudoglu and his donations but this is not the time and place for this. So I take this beautiful, spiritual place to design my ideas but as a national monument my actions towards it are minimal but crucial. The idea is to consolidate the facade with a new secondary reinforced concrete construction ( the decision for this big step was made under long "banging your head against the wall" thinking - the collapsed roof and the unstable existing constructions helped). The most important thing is to renovate the facade - reserving the typical architectural look the building is carrying, reserving the details and restoring the historical spirit. Everything else is designing the typical for this type of buildings - loft apartments on three levels, ground floor with a bookstore and two galleries and a basement floor with parking spaces. The design is more about interesting interior spaces and reserving a building with rich historical past in a modern way. The interior is a rich mixture of modern style with a little tint of industrial and vintage aftertaste with traditional bulgarian motives.
