George Petev and his MASTER’S THESIS devoted to warehouses in the Tobacco City
Master's thesis to achieve Diplom-Ingenieur Master’s degree programme: Architecture by Graz University of Technology /Supervisor Univ.-Prof. Dipl.-Arch. Petra Petersson KOEN Institute/.
Georgi had chosen to devote huge amount of time, research, emotion and professional attitude in the creation of his master thesis for the idea and concet of the transformation of three of the buildings in the square formed by the streets: Ivan Vazov, Captain Andrteev, D-r G. M. Dimitrov and Ekzarh Yosiff. Two of the buildings are the legacy of Dimitar Kudoglu and the third is the emblematic warehouse on 13 Ekzarh Yosiff.
This project is a proposition for the adaptive reuse of iconic cultural monuments - the abandoned tobacco warehouses in Plovdiv. Despite of the severe
condition of the buildings, there is still a potential for adaptation and reconnection with the contemporary urban context. The motivation behind it? From a subjective point of view I would be glad if this Master thesis could give a suggestion of how the city could tackle issues with abandoned cultural monuments whilst increasing the number of cultural centers. The city of Plovdiv needs to make space for the hosting of events, as preparations for “Plovdiv - European Capital of Culture in 2019” are on the run.
